Dear Friends,
It is a very great privilege to be at St. Andrew’s during this Holy Week. It is the jewel of our calendar, the most meaningful time in our liturgical year. In its different liturgies on different days, it is meant to evoke a very wide range of emotions for each of us in our different walks through this most sacred week. Thinking of it as a walk or journey is especially appropriate because we receive it from a pilgrim named Egeria, who noted all the Holy Week observances in her time in Fourth-century Jerusalem.
It is in that sense of a journey that I hope you will worship with us this week. While each service is distinct, they represent different steps along the journey toward The Sunday of the Resurrection. It is in that spirit that I encourage all to make that walk and attend as many of our Holy Week observances as we can: Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. I guarantee that the end of the journey on Easter Sunday will be more meaningful if we do!
I wish everyone a blessed Holy Week. May it be a time of self-discovery and renewal for each of us!
In Christ,
The Rev. Mark Smith
